Building Permit Expeditor serving cities in Los Angeles County
The Plan Check Process
I usually get phone calls from confused and frustrated homeowners about what happens during the building plan check process. I finally decided to write an article explaining the typical process for the City of Los Angeles (it is usually a similar process for other municipalities). The first step is to define your project. Is it new construction, an addition/major remodel, or a remodel where you want to remove or re-arrange interior walls? If you have hired a licensed architect or structural engineer to provide these services then they should know how to put together the required drawing set to submit to building and safety for plan check. If you, as a homeowner, have drafted the design plan yourself, then you will need to draft (or hire someone to draft) a complete set of plans showing the proposed work and submit to the building department.
